The distillery’s own tours are free, but the drive, the guide and the distilleries around it are worth booking — see what a full day with transfers runs.

Spring and autumn: the sweet spot

April through May and October through November are when to visit if you have flexibility. Weather is mild, the landscape is changing (spring growth, autumn colour), and the distillery is busy but not overwhelmed. Summer brings heat and humidity. Winter is quiet but cold.

The Wednesday morning booking scramble

New tour dates drop eight weeks out, every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. EST. If you have fixed travel dates, mark your calendar for Wednesdays that fall eight weeks before your trip. Set a phone reminder for 10:00 a.m. The Hard Hat Tour sells out in under two minutes; the Trace Tour lasts longer but fills early in the day. If the dates you want are sold out, you have other options.

The 2025 flood and what it means now

In early April 2025 the Kentucky River crested at over 48 feet, the second-highest flood in the distillery’s 200-year history. It damaged more than 100 buildings on campus. The cleanup and repair cost over $30 million. Production stopped for roughly a month. The barrel inventory was unharmed, and the campus fully reopened within a few months. The distillery is fully operating now. Do not plan your visit around "will they be open." They are open.

Holiday closures

The distillery is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. If your Wednesday tour date falls on a holiday, that release will not happen. Plan around the calendar.

Summer and winter

Summer is hot, humid, and crowded. Winter is quiet and cold. Both work if you have the time; neither is ideal. Most people visit in spring or autumn.
