Why it sells out in under two minutes

This is the only free tour that takes you into active rackhouses where barrels are actually ageing. The other two tours show you the gift shop, the history, and the grounds. This one shows you what bourbon actually looks like in the warehouse, stored on ricks of scaffolding, bleeding into wood, changing colour and proof as it sits there. That matters to people who think about bourbon past the cocktail stage. The limit is smaller than the other tours, and the interest is higher. When the Wednesday 10:00 a.m. release happens, people refresh. The Hard Hat slot goes first.

Rackhouse F and the barrel sample

You go inside an active warehouse full of bourbon. The rackhouse is unheated, which is deliberate—the temperature swings from summer heat to winter cold are what the oak is built for, and why bourbon ages faster in Kentucky than anywhere else in the world. The guide explains rackhouse placement: a barrel on the top tier ages faster and hotter than a barrel on the ground floor. This is not theory. Then you taste. The guide pulls samples from three barrels of different ages and proof. You drink them straight. This is why this tour costs the time to get: you cannot get this anywhere else for free.

The tasting at the end

Like all Buffalo Trace tours, this one ends with the complimentary guided tasting at the gift shop in 1881 Warehouse A. You get four more pours from the house selection. If you tasted three barrels in the warehouse, you are tasting four at the shop. That is seven tastes in one day, and you are not paying for any of them.
